Description

2023 is the 125th year of birth of M.C. Escher (1898-1972). Kunstmuseum Den Haag and Escher in Het Paleis own the largest Escher collection in the world and are celebrating this anniversary year with various exhibitions.

Michael Barnaart designed this scarf in collaboration with these museums. Pied-de-poule (also known as houndstooth) is an ancient archetypal textile pattern. I distorted the design, as an ode to Escher’s revolutionary tessellations and optical illusions, making the design appear to move. Hence the name: ‘pied de mouvement’.
